Onsite Liquefaction Unit from Argentina Fills ‘Huge Gap.’

Got access to a pipeline and need LNG for vehicles? Don’t care to invest in a massive industrial installation?

“This is a huge gap in the market,” says Joseph Shinn of Southern California’s Clean Fuel Connection. His firm represents Argentina’s Galileo, promoting Galileo’s Cryobox, a $4.5 million unit that can produce some 9,000 gallons of LNG onsite using pipeline gas.

Cryobox handles inlet pressures of 160 to 725 psi.

A ‘Compact and Transportable Module’

Galileo, one of the grand names in GNV – gas natural vehicular – in Latin America, offers too a wide range of CNG fueling solutions, like Microbox and Nanobox compressor packages, and modular virtual pipeline units for transporting CNG in quantity
by truck.

Cryobox is said to have all the capabilities of a large scale LNG plant in a “compact and transportable module which shares the off-the-shelf components and main features of Galileo’s compressor packages, namely: modularity, low weight, economies in transport and ease of installation.

Clean Fuel Connection also handles equipment for charging electric vehicles.

Buquebus has been honored with the annual Black Diamond Award. This award is given to the top LNG fuel project to advance technology, open new markets, and achieve the smoothest execution considering the degree of difficulty.

The awarding was held during the last edition of the World LNG Fuels conference, which took place on January 21-23, 2013, at the George R. Brown Convention Center, in Houston, TX, USA. The event is the largest and oldest conference to focus on advancing markets for LNG as transportation fuel and its award is given for achieving the highest standards across four criteria: a) technological innovation, b) project execution, c) market impact and d) risk taken.

“We are very pleased with this reognition given to Buquebus, since we are deeply involved with their project by being the developers of the seven Cryobox® Nano LNG-Stations that will supply the LNG for its Francisco high speed Ro-Ro ship,” says Osvaldo del Campo, Galileo´s CEO.

These Galileo’s state-of-the-art liquefiers will supply the 66 tons per day (ton/day) of LNG required by for the Francisco´s two daily frequencies between Montevideo, Uruguay, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, which involves the transport of up to 1,000 passengers and 150 cars at cruising speeds around 50 knots.

For the first time in a half century, energy suppliers in China, the United States, Canada, Northern Europe, Australia, Africa and parts of Latin America are contemplating displacing their imported crude oil with domestically produced natural gas.

CONSIDER THESE FACTS:

  • Gas-bearing shale deposits have now been discovered in more than 47 countries, most of which are dependent on oil imports.
  • Each is initiating efforts to switch transportation, especially heavy-duty trucks, ships and locomotives, to natural gas. These are best suited for LNG.
  • More than a quarter of world energy production, nearly 90 million barrels of petroleum, is consumed every day by transportation.
  • That’s 15 times the energy represented by world LNG trade.
  • In the U.S., heavy duty trucks alone consume some 94 million gallons of diesel daily (110 million metric tons per year).
  • That’s enough diesel to fill Houston’s Reliant Stadium 51 times.
  • Commercial marine vessels consume another 22.1 million gallons per day. U.S. locomotives consume 11.4 million gallons and drilling rigs, 2.1 million gallons per day.
  • If the U.S. were to convert these markets to LNG, it would represent a market about half of world LNG trade.
  • The U.S. represents only 19% of the world petroleum market.
  • If all heavy duty transportation – trucks, commercial vessels, locomotives and drilling rigs – were to convert to LNG, some 600 million tonnes would be needed globally every year.
  • Carbon emissions would fall by almost 0.7 billion tonnes annually.
  • Diesel smoke and diesel sulfur emissions, which contribute to acid rain, would disappear.

Utility Taps ChargePoint Network for Data Gathering at Eight Partner Locations: Retail, Manufacturing Plant, Corporate Office, Municipal, Community College and Hospital.

Chargepoint EV chargerCampbell, Calif., November 14, 2011 – Coulomb Technologies today announced that KCP&L, an investor-owned utility headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., is using Coulomb’s ChargePoint® Network to access essential electric vehicle (EV) charging station data collected for a three-year pilot program in and around the Kansas City region.  The program consists of eight diverse program-partner EV charging sites including a community college, hospital, manufacturing plant, corporate office, municipal and retail locations.  The charging network is used to gather data from EV drivers including usage, number of charging events, number of kilowatt hours used and how it translates to greenhouse gas savings.

KCP&L serves more than 800,000 customers in 47 northwestern Missouri and eastern Kansas counties. KCP&L selected Coulomb distributor Carbon Day Automotive and its local reseller LilyPad EV to install the 10 EV charging stations throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area.

“We are pleased that ChargePoint Network is the enabler for this pilot project to provide data collection for vehicle use and charging patterns,” said Pat Romano, president and CEO at Coulomb Technologies.  ”This program highlights a new industry of clean transportation in the Kansas City area and the need for and benefits of EV infrastructure throughout the region.”

KCP&L’s pilot project is funded by U.S. Department of Energy award DE-EE0002538, an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant project awarded to the Metropolitan Energy Center (MEC). KCP&L is working with the Kansas City Regional Clean Cities Coalition, a program of MEC, to administer the grant.

“In order to fulfill the requirements of this pilot program we needed a turnkey networked electric vehicle solution,”said Roland Maliwat, KCP&L sustainability products manager. “ChargePoint Network was a great solution to help us meet those requirements.”

ChargePoint Network provides access to essential charging station data.  It includes: a web-based application that lets KCP&L customize their EV charging operations to measure and manage their success, 24/7 driver support, and access to the largest and most brand-loyal network of EV drivers in the world.

Galileo’s Enersave system reduces operating costs by controlling energy use.  The smart software controls the variable speed motor to avoid electrical demand peaks and even “learns” the compressor’s daily duty cycle to anticipate fueling needs.

The natural gas is cooled at each stage of the compression cycle.  The cooled gas goes directly to the dispenser, and provides a full “fill” regardless of ambient temperature.
