According to an analysis by the Sun Day Campaign of data in the latest issue of the US Energy Information Administration's (EIA) "Electric Power Monthly" (with statistics through December 31, 2017), electricity generated by renewable energy sources (i.e., biomass, geothermal, hydropower, solar, wind) was 13.2% higher in 2017 than in 2016. Moreover, the production by each renewable energy source - as well as its share of the total energy mix -increased: solar (utility-scale +...

The United States could reliably meet about 80% of its electricity demand with solar and wind power generation, according to scientists at the University of California, Irvine; the California Institute of Technology; and the Carnegie Institution for Science. However, meeting 100% of electricity demand with only solar and wind energy would require storing several weeks’ worth of electricity to compensate for the natural variability of these two resources, the researchers said....

As the cost of solar energy drops and electric rates rise, solar is getting much closer to grid parity. At the same time, efficiencies are going up in tiny increments, thanks to innovative and varied research underway around the world. For example, bio-mimicry-themed studies use plants and butterflies as the basis of new designs; stretchy coatings can put solar on clothing; lead-free designs reduce the toxic substances in solar cells; and light is found to heal defects in perovskite....

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) urged the New Jersey Legislature to pass Senate Bill 877 to keep the state’s solar industry growing and maintain the more than 7,100 solar jobs in one of the largest solar markets in the US. The bill was examined in a joint hearing held by the state Senate Budget and Appropriations and the Assembly Telecommunications and Utilities committees. The legislation would modify the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) Solar Renewable...
